Urban Studies
Professors Carlyle Fraser and Lawrence Zeroth
Pratt Rome
Spring 2012

This course gathers together the ancillary visits and sitework that supplement the design studio. Beginning with a survey of Rome the architecturally, archaeologically , and historically significant sites are examined. It alo includes three organized filed trips intended to maximize the students exposure to critical sites and buildings, encompassing diverse historic periods.

The tours across Italy included a Northern and Southern Field Trip. In the North, we toured Palladio, Scarpa and the Veneto. Including private tours of the work of Palladio (Villa Rotunda, Teatro Olimpico, Villa Emo) and Carlo Scarpa) Castel Vecchio, Brion Cemetary, Canova Museum). We also visited Spoleto, Assisi, Urbino, Modena, Mantova, Verona and Vicenza in the North of Italy. Naples, Pompeii, Paestum, Trani, Lecce, and Matera in the South.

In conjunction with the field trips there was required reading, research, on-site analysis, observation, and presentation to the faculty and students by smaller groups. The work produced was based on free hand representation.

Sketching
Pratt Institute Rome
Spring 2012

The investigation of the remains of antiquity and rome’s urban artifacts can offer a unique lesson; the interaction of physical cause and cultural effect on the built environment and its eternal presence. The Rome Program at Pratt undertakes an intensive study of the city’s architectural and cultural history, providing an experiential insight into the precedents that have had an enormous impact on the development of architecture in the western world.

The sketching course explores freehand drawing as a means for investigating and comprehending Rome's urban space. Various techniques and media are introduced including: figure and ground, shade and shadow, multiple perspective, collage, pen and ink, pastel and charcoal.

Digital Fabrication
Fall 2010
Professor Ezra Ardolino

This seminar investigated the design and manufacturing of architectural products as a function of digital modeling and fabrication technology. Via an immersive and recursive environment of 3-dimensional laser scanning, computational modeling and cnc fabrication.

Concepts
3D laser scanning was employed as a method of generating a collective library of data sets. We identified specimens of natural rule-based formative processes, including sponges, tree bark, coral, and ginger.

Computational Modeling
Modeling software was introduced and explored as a means of accessing 3d data and generating design models. Models were developed based on their identity and clarity.

Digital Fabrication
Computer-aided manufacturing software and cnc milling was introduced and explored as a means of evaluating and developing models. Specific emphasis was placed on the potential of tooling paths, both in terms of the bit and the algorithm employed to drive the cutting motion of the tool bit.

Vacuum Forming
Vacuum forming was employed as a means of realizing an extended/tiled manifestation of the surface effects generated via digital fabrication.

Representation II
Professor James Brucz
Spring 2009

The Farnsworth House was designed by Mies van der Rohe’s and completed in 1951, outside of Plano, Illinois. This series of analysis drawings focuses on the integration and relationship between man, architecture, and nature. The framework of the Farnsworth house reflects its natural surroundings, with a minimal footprint on the site below. The floor plan of the house is loose and open; a wood-paneled core is positioned within the open space to suggest living and dining spaces without using walls, providing necessities for man. The surrounding exterior is composed of glass, allowing full vision of the surrounding exterior landscape and an abundance of light within. The glass enclosure attempts to integrate both the interior and exterior, to make the house part of the surrounding landscape.

Representation I
Professor Anthony Titus
Fall 2008

The objective of this course was an introduction to fundamental architectural drawing. The objective of the project enriched, extended, and supported two-dimensional drawings as a method of development, communication, and exploration. We were asked to construct measured architectural hand drawings based on our design projects, represented in a variety of mediums. This particular drawing exhibits the development of the two mechanisms into their hybridized state. The coursework emphasized the representational possibilities enabled by architectural drawing, additionally highlighting the drawing’s ability to aid in the understanding and simplification of complex form and idea.

Kindergarten
Intermediate Design
Professor Evan Tribus
Spring 2010

“Our studio’s particular approach to the Kindergarten posited that the conceptual framework of Sensation be the vehicle by which to unpack the education of the Kindergarten student. Notions of active play, the acquisition of knowledge, the socializing of the child, the placing of the child in the world and more were conceptualized through this lens. Several analogical sources and reference material were analyzed and interrogated including Deleuze’s Francis Bacon: The Logic of Sensation, Jonah Lehrer’s Proust was a Neuroscientist, dream sequences from select films and a close reading of Friedrich Froebel’s writings. Surface morphologies were explored to address the specific senses of tactility and vision. These surface effects were calibrated and curated with respect to specific programs within the Kindergarten. While each student developed a thesis for their design proposal, all were in the context of the acquisition of knowledge through bodily experiences.”

The underlying concept of this kindergarten operates as an effective regulator of the learning process by offering moments of divergence for both the individual and the collective. Individual and collective experience is distinct and disproportionate, but equally important to the development of a child.

Student Housing
Comprehensive Design I
Michael Cranfill
Fall 2010

This studio proposed an extension of Pratt student housing into Union Square. The conceptual basis merged student life with artistic display within the dense urban fabric of Lower Manhattan. Crucial elements in the project’s development included the emphasis of fulfilling the program requirements and overcoming site constraints. The studio also introduced the practicalities of structural and façade design, particularly within high rise structures.
